Guidelines
RESPONSIBLE USE OF GENERATIVE AI IN RESEARCH
The European Research Area Forum (composed of European countries and research and innovation stakeholders), have developed guidelines on the use of generative AI in research for: funding bodies, research organisations and researchers, both in the public and private research ecosystems. |
Acknowledging your use of generative AI
Consider acknowledging your use of generative AI (Gen AI) in your written work, even if it is not strictly required.
WHY?
WHY?
- Transparency and Trust: By being upfront about using Gen AI, you demonstrate transparency in your work. This builds trust with your reader.
- Credibility: Gen AI can be a powerful tool, but the information generated needs vetting. Acknowledging its use shows that you have critically reviewed the content.
- Promoting Responsible Use: The field of Gen AI is evolving rapidly. By acknowledging its use, you contribute to responsible practices and discussions around its role in writing.
HOW?
Simple Statement: A brief statement in your acknowledgement section or preface can suffice. Mention the Gen AI tool you used and the general way it assisted you (e.g., brainstorming ideas, outlining structure).
Specific When Necessary: If Gen AI played a significant role in a particular section, you can add a specific note there. Briefly explain how the tool helped you with that part.
Here's an example acknowledgement:
I acknowledge the use of Generative AI tool [Name of Tool] to brainstorm ideas and develop the initial outline for this paper.
